Reviews of unidentified coffees are posted when the reviewers cannot recommend purchasing that particular coffee.
The coffee and roaster are kept anonymous for two reasons. First, giving a bad review is an activity that should not be undertaken without enough sampling enough coffee to be sure that the review is a fair reflection on that roaster or coffee. Second, the coffee has not tested well enough to deserve recognition on this site.
The coffee and roaster are kept anonymous rather than simply not publishing the review for three additional reasons. First, it provides a measure of transparency to the review process. Second, it is hoped that providing information about why coffees are not recommended will encourage people to develop their own appreciation for coffee. After all, recognising good coffee is impossible without recognising bad coffee. This is particularly important given the meteoric increase in information available over the internet in the past few years; how would you ever tell if a coffee roaster’s tasting notes are genuine, or if they have just based them on the latest hot thing that they have read? Third, keeping a record will eventually give us some sort of an idea of how special great roasters and coffees are. It won’t be great data, but it will be interesting.
